Working Trials 2016

Gill : 4 June 2016 10:50 am : Tracking, Working Trials

Companion Dog is held at various shows through out the year but typically the first show of the year where Tracker Dog I and Tracker Dog II is offered is the Cape Welsh Corgi Show at the end of April. Entries are usually small as it’s early in the tracking season and this year was no exception.

We had a fun day out in the fields and although there were no qualifications we saw some superb obedience from our competitors and the dogs and handlers all enjoyed the day out. Thanks to those that entered, I enjoyed judging and you gave Richard and I the opportunity to do out Learner Judging appointments in TDII.

Cape Welsh Corgi - Louis and Peggy-Sue, 1st in TDII, Richard and Flynn II, 2nd in TDII

On Saturday the 30th April Beginner Companion Dog and Companion Dog were on offer at the Australian Shepherd Show which was held at The Cape Handlers Dog Club at Theo Marais Park. Again a small number of entries with no qualifications but a great learning experience.

Aussie Shepherd - Angie and Imre, 1st in CD, Theo and Rex 1st in Beginner CD

The next show is the Cape Terrier Tracking Trials show which will be held on the 7th May with Vincent Fry as judge followed by the Cape Terrier Working Trials show on the 14th.

Working Trials Is Alive and Very Well

Gill : 25 September 2015 8:11 pm : Dogs in the News, Tracking, Working Trials

Happy Working Trials Bunch

Happy Working Trials Bunch

Although I haven’t covered many shows this year due to life interfering with my plans, it’s been an exceptional year for Working Trials in the Western Cape. Our sport has shown phenomenal growth in the past year and while Daks and I were off traipsing around the country side in August, the intrepid trackers were doing their thing back home and we had a record number of entries at the Western Province Rottweiler Show with sixteen competitors.

Not only were the number of entries amazing but the results were as well. There were ten qualifications on the Saturday, five of these being Excellent(above 90%) and four of those qualifications in TDIII with three excellents. On the Sunday at the Working and Herding Breeds Club Of The Cape, there was no companion dog on offer and the number of entries was nine. Most notable score for the weekend was Angie and Quando’s qualification in TDIII with 98%. Wow!

Probably the happiest news was that our good friends Charlie, the Springer Spaniel, and Camilla achieved an excellent qualification in TDlll. Since this was his third qualification at that level and an excellent, Charlie earned his Champion Title. Well done guys!

Charlie and Camilla Tracking

Also a big well done to Katie and Jane who qualified excellent in TDII and moved up to TDIII and to Walcko and Carl who qualified in TDI.

The September Champ Shows were pretty tough as the fields were full of beautiful flowers which caused much sneezing for the dogs and made the tracking conditions very difficult. In true working trials spirit the handlers took everything in their stride and while it’s difficult to end a weekend of competing and tracking without a signature on your card, the atmosphere at base camp was still upbeat and joyful.

Richard and Rummy also have three qualifications in TDIII and just chasing that excellent to make Champion status. We’re watching you guys :)

Rummy and Richard

If I was to list the success stories of the season I would be bound to miss somebody out so I’ll just say we’ve seen phenomenal progress from the new competitors with members qualifying in Companion Dog and TDI. On the Tracking Trials front, we’ve seen qualifications from the new members in TTI and TTII.

We ended the tracking season today with the Belgian Shepherd Club Tracking Trials Show. Great efforts from our new competitors in TTI with Eve and Maureen qualifying in first place and Walcko and Carl qualifying in second place.

Eve - First Qualification, Second Birthday

Eve – First Qualification, Second Birthday

Unfortunately there were no qualifications in TTII today but in TTIII we had a great qualification from Katie and Jane and in TTIV Charlie and Camilla had the track of the day qualifying excellent with 91%.

Our day ended with the AGM and a lovely braai at the club. All that’s left of the working trials competitions is the Cape Handlers Dog Club Companion Dog stake on Saturday at Theo Marais Park. Good luck to all.

This really is a fantastic way to spend time with your dogs and we hope to see our numbers staying strong and the spirit of working trials continue for many years to come. This last pic I just had to include. Charlie and Daks, long time friends. Love this photo of our boys.

Cape Terrier Club Working Trials and Tracking Trials 2015

Gill : 22 May 2015 1:23 pm : Tracking, Working Trials

This month was a busy month for the Western Cape Working Trials bunch. The Cape Terrier Club Tracking Trial was held on the 9th May and the Cape Terrier Club Working Trials Show on the 17th May. The ground is hard and dry and conditions at this time of the year are tough for the dogs. In addition, it’s the beginning of the season and both dogs and handlers are a tad rusty after the summer break.

Daks and I weren’t there for the Tracking Trials Show but I was very pleased to hear that two of the newer members of the group qualified. Well done to Gavin and Sage who qualified in TTI and to Philip and Bella who qualified in TTII. I think the bug has bitten :)

On the 17th for the Working Trials show, the tracking proved to be too tough for all the dogs entered in the higher categories. In Companion Dog, the competitors fared a little better. We had a qualification for Louis and Peggy-Sue. Well done! She’s such a sweetie, I was really happy to see her go through. The sad story of the day was Janine and big, boy Lobo who missed qualifying by 2 points in the agility section. His overall mark was high enough but in Working Trials, you need to attain at least 70% in each of the three categories and 80% overall. His mom still went home happy after a great performance.

Once again, a big thank you to the Cape Terrier Club for their continued support over the years. Alwine, we really appreciate this. To our track layers and judge, thank you. Working Trials really is a team sport. Thanks also to Richard Davis for fetching the agility equipment and bringing it to the field and to Philip and Richard Twell for taking it home and tucking it in. Not forgetting Camilla, for capturing the memories on her camera.

Dobermann Club Of The Cape Show – 2015

Gill : 29 March 2015 9:55 pm : Dogs in the News, Working Trials

The Dobermann Club Of The Cape Championship Show was held at Theo Marais Park in Cape Town on the 28th March 2015. The Dobie Club are always great supporters of Working Trials and thanks to the hard work put in by our trainers, the number of entrants in our discipline is growing. We’re looking forward to a busy and competitive season. Thanks to everyone who entered and to our sponsors, Hills.

There’s a new class in Working Trials called Beginner Companion Dog. It isn’t a required entry level class and is optional for people starting out in the sport and dipping their toe into the competitive world of working trials. I’ll do a post on the requirements in the near future but it’s available on the KUSA website for those that are interested.

Walkco Searching

Walkco Searching

In Beginner’s Companion Dog we had a lovely qualification from the ever enthusiastic Bella and in Companion Dog, a qualification went to Walkco. It’s been lovely to see how this boy has grown in confidence over the last year. Well done guys.

As all competitors in working trials know, part of what makes working trials more difficult than other disciplines is that there are three categories and you need to qualify in all three with 70% and achieve 80% overall to qualify. This means that you can get a qualifying score of over 80% and still not qualify because of one category.

The three categories are Obedience, Agility and Nosework. To qualify, everything needs to come together on the day. This is not always easy so it’s really important to enjoy the journey.

We had two great qualifications on the day

Worth mentioning here is that the most difficult exercise is the ten minute out of sight down stay. It’s quite interesting to note that, of the competitors who didn’t qualify in the stay, they all broke during the first few seconds of the exercise. So, for aspiring working trials competitors, the thing to get right, is for your dog to be happy for you to leave them in the down and disappear from view.

Well done everyone, we say some great obedience displays and some flawless agility exercises. See you all again on the 25th April for the Cape Welsh Corgi Show.

Working Trials KUSA Nationals 2014

Gill : 4 June 2014 8:25 am : Working Trials

Cape Town hosted the KUSA Nationals and KUSA Championship Working Trials shows this past weekend. Nationals has only Tracker Dog III and Police Dog on offer. In order to compete in the Nationals, the dogs need to have qualified in TDIII previously.

Quando - KUSA National Tracker Dog Champion 2014

Quando – KUSA National Tracker Dog Champion 2014

Judge Vincent Fry from Gauteng officiated and was very impressed with the level of competition, particularly the Control section. Best track of the day went to Bronte and young Rummy got full marks for her redirected send-away. Vincent said it is a long time since he has been able to award full marks for this exercise.

The dog that came out tops on the day was Quando, achieving an Excellent Qualification and earning the title of KUSA National Tracker Dog Champion 2014. This boy is always a pleasure to watch. He really loves to work and this was a great performance. Congratulations to all who took part on the exceptional level of competition.

I couldn’t attend the Championship Show on Sunday so unfortunately don’t have any photo’s but did make sure to get the results telephonically. Again, an excellent qualification in TDIII to Quando making Angie a very, very happy handler indeed and a qualification in TDII for Odie which I’m sure Linda was over the moon about.

Our track layers worked particularly hard arriving at the field by 7am on both Saturday and Sunday so thanks to Arthur and Richard as well as Sarah who laid the TDII tracks on Sunday.

Our next show will be the Cape Handlers Show with Working Trials (Classic) on Saturday 5th July and Tracking Trials on Sunday 6th July.

Cape Welsh Corgi Working Trials Show – 2014

Gill : 19 April 2014 3:32 pm : Working Trials

Besides Companion Dog which is sometimes on offer at obedience, agility and flyball shows, the Cape Welsh Corgi Show in Richwood on Saturday was our first show for the season held out in the veld with tracking on offer.

Western Cape Working Trials

Western Cape Working Trials

We’re happy to have some new competitors in the Companion Dog category and hope to see the numbers grow even more during the year. Some of the new members are just starting out and we wish them loads of fun and success. It was also great to have some guests pop-in today. Good to see Stella and Chris out in the fields.

Richard Davis and I did our learner judge appointments for Tracker Dog 1 today so a big thank you to our competitors who had us tagging along with their judge and to Angie for overseeing. As a reminder, here’s what the dogs need to do for Tracker Dog I.

Best track of the day went to Odie. He was superb to watch and this dog really epitomises what working trials is all about, from the track right through to the obedience and agility. A happy, working dog. Odie got an awesome 95% overall gaining an excellent qualification. Another great track today was from Katie. This girl’s tracking just gets better and better. Lovely to see the improvement in her focus and the tracks being less hectic.

Odie - Every Reason To Look Happy!

Odie – Every Reason To Look Happy!

We saw great progress from our Companion Dog competitors. For those who haven’t attempted it, don’t underestimate this qualification. Everything needs to come together on the day and competing on the farm is totally different to competing on a club field. Handlers have so much to focus on as the surface is rough and distractions for the dogs abound. A great effort guys.

Sambuca - Welcome To The Fields

In Tracker Dog II we only had one competitor today. Nice to see Louis and Siobhan back after a bit of a break.

Working Trials Show Dates 2014

Quando - TDIII Quartering Search

Quando – TDIII Quartering Search

Here’s the list you working trials guys have been waiting for. Most of the shows aren’t finalised as yet but here’s the provisional list. Closing dates for entries will only be available later, as the schedules are released, and please remember that the disciplines on offer are subject to change.

Championship shows are in bold and the others are Non-Championship Shows. With Working Trials and Tracking Trials, because track layers need to be organised for each competitor, no entries are accepted on the day or after the closing date.

It looks like a lot of shows but there’re quite a few in Port Elizabeth this year and the disciplines are spread out over three weekends for these shows.

Speaking of Port Elizabeth, the reason I chose these particular photo’s for this post is because …………
we’re so proud of our team mates Angie Brooke with Quando and Sheila Wills with Bronte who both achieved Working Trials Champion status this weekend at the PE shows. Not forgetting young Rummy who got her very first TD3 qualification. Well done guys.

Cape Rottweiler Working Trials Championship Show 2013

Gill : 18 September 2013 7:35 am : Working Trials

PresSpin

So, since Daks and I hadn’t entered the September Shows and I never had anything scheduled for the Sunday I got roped in as a track layer for the Cape Rottweiler Show. I’ve laid a number of tracks over the past few years but laying tracks for a show is a whole new ball-game. We only have four championship shows a year in the Western Cape and our competitors work hard through out the year for the chance of a qualification and a KUSA certificate at one of these shows.

So, us track layers headed out at a quarter to seven to start laying our tracks and … the heavens opened and … the rain came down. Barely able to see and squinting into the rain the tracks were laid. One of the competitors later described this as ‘sheet rain and a wind chill factor of two degrees’.

Our judge even found her pen floating in her pocket! No kidding, the rain and wind didn’t let up and conditions just proved to be too difficult on the day.

If you’ve been following the Working Trials posts over the past year, you’ll see our dogs have been qualifying and moving up through the grades. The fact that we had no qualifications on this day is no reflection on their ability or dedication and I have to say, a big well done to everyone. Not a single team that entered the show failed to arrive. In that appalling weather, I think you’ll have to agree they’re all winners.

And our winners were really grateful and happy to receive the fantastic stainless steel prizes from PresSpin. Thanks so much for sponsoring our show and acknowledging the hard work put in by our teams of dogs and handlers.

Cape Handlers Dog Club Working Trials Champ Show 2013

Gill : 16 September 2013 10:35 pm : Working Trials

Daks and I weren’t at the Cape Handlers Show on Saturday but by all accounts it was a rough start to the day but warmed up and became quite pleasant later on. Still, conditions were tough for both the handlers and the dogs.

Weather wise it’s always the luck of the draw. Last September we had such heat on the one day the dogs really battled and this weekend was the opposite extreme. With these trying conditions, there were only two qualifications but both of them graded excellent, which is over 90%.

Katie and Jane qualified in Tracker Dog I winning the Cape Handlers Cup. Well done! Angie and Quando also achieved an excellent qualification in Tracker Dog III. Two shows, two qualifications! We were all thrilled to hear this.

Thanks to Camilla for sending us this great pic of judge Bobby and Jane and Katie.

The Working And Herding Breeds Club Of The Cape – Working Trials Championship Show 2013

Gill : 25 August 2013 9:08 pm : Working Trials

The second of our August Championship Working Trials shows was held today at Matjieskuil. We all fought our way through the mist on the N1 and arrived at a freezing cold and very misty field. The sun soon came up and the mist cleared for a superb day. No jackets, short sleeve T-shirts but not too hot for the dogs.

Misty Morning

We had some great results with competitors going home beaming from ear to ear. Particularly our ladies in TDIII where we had three qualifications. Well done to Bobby who qualified with both her dogs, Quest and Tyler, both yesterday and today and to Sheila and Bronte for earning their second qualification in TDIII.
