Halloween seems to be getting bigger in South Africa every year. Here’s a special treat for your doggies.

Wholewheat Pumpkin Treats.

Pumpkin is great because it’s packed with vitamins and fibre. I like to roast mine with a little olive oil and then mash or puree it. When preparing roast pumpkin for the family you can make a bit extra and reserve it for you next batch of biscuits. It freezes really well.

The flour I use is stone ground which means none of the goodness is lost. For more information on this process and the benefits of using flour prepared in this manner visit Eureka Mills. This product has become more readily available recently but there is also a list of suppliers on the site if you can’t find it where you usually shop.

When buying peanut butter, look out for the sugar free, salt free one. I also use free range eggs.

1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup wheat germ
2 free range eggs
1/2 cup pumpkin (cooked – mash or puree)
2 Tbs peanut butter
1 tsp baking powder (optional)
1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)

The consistency should be soft but not wet.
Roll out or flatten with your hands and cut into shapes.
Brush with beaten egg if desired.
Bake in a pre-heated oven at 350 degrees for approximately 40 mins.

Yip. Good for humans too. But your dog will probably object if you eat them all!

  2. Angelo

looks delicious, are they good for human hounds as well ?

    1. They are indeed! Gill and Daks already had a few last night (and as far as I know… they were both full of energy this morning)
